Oakley Meta Vanguard: Smart Glasses Designed for Athletes

Developed for athletes, the Oakley Meta Vanguard has been introduced with a durable design and smart features. The glasses, set to be released in October, also feature improvements in camera and battery performance.
When Meta introduced its first Oakley-branded smart sunglasses, the HSTN, earlier this year, it described them as performance-focused AI glasses. However, the HSTN models offered only minor improvements compared to the Ray-Ban series. The new Oakley Meta Vanguard, on the other hand, arrives with a design and comprehensive features aimed at athletes.
Targeting Athletes

Unveiled at the Connect event, the Vanguard comes with Oakley’s familiar wraparound design frames and bright, interchangeable lenses. For the first time, Meta has moved the camera’s position to the center of the frames, above the nose bridge. The reason for this is that hats or helmets worn by action sports athletes could obstruct the camera’s view.
Meanwhile, significant improvements have been made to the camera. It offers a 12-megapixel sensor, a 122-degree wide-angle lens, and adjustable video stabilization. Additionally, special modes have been added for slow-motion videos and Instagram-friendly hyperlapse recordings. Similarly, the battery performance has also been addressed.
They now last for 6 hours of music playback and 9 hours of mixed use. The charging case provides an extra 36 hours of power. Meta also notes that the glasses have been optimized for a wider temperature range, making the battery more durable in very cold or very hot environments.
During the Connect presentation, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg also mentioned that the open-ear speakers are 6 decibels louder than the previous model. Additionally, the glasses have an IP67 water resistance certification. Therefore, we can say that the Oakley Meta Vanguard is a product that brings improvements in every area and is directly aimed at athletes.
The record button on the glasses has also been moved to the lower right side, and an “action button” has been added that users can assign their own actions to. For example, it can start a Spotify playlist, trigger a hyperlapse recording, or perform tasks like getting a surf report or identifying objects with Meta AI.
The Oakley Meta Vanguard also includes Strava and Garmin integrations. This makes it possible to get information like heart rate and speed from Meta AI while exercising.
Oakley Meta Vanguard Price and Release Date
In terms of design, the Vanguard may not appeal to everyone, and wraparound glasses might not be most people’s preference. However, the Oakley Meta Vanguard packs all its features into a $499 price tag. For athletes and those who love to share their activities, the price seems ideal.
The Oakley Meta Vanguard glasses are already available for pre-order. The release date is October 21, 2025.
